Day 02: Amman – Ajloun – Jerash – Amman

Tal Mar Elias: This little-visited archaeological site, believed to be the birthplace of the prophet Elijah, gives you just the excuse you need to explore the countryside around Ajloun. To be honest, it’s not a spectacular site by any stretch of the imagination, though it’s worth checking out for its religious and historical significance.

Anjara: The ancient town of Anjara is located in the hills of Gilead east of the Jordan Valley. The town is mentioned in the Bible as a place where Jesus, his mother Mary and his disciples, passed through and rested in a nearby cave. The cave, which has long been a Holy place for pilgrims, has now been commemorated with a modern shrine / church of Our Lady of the Mountain. The cave was also designated by the Catholic Churches of the Middle East, as one of the five pilgrimage sites for the Year 2000.

Ajloun: proceed through pine forests and olive groves to visit the mighty Castle of Ajloun. The Castle is the major ancient monument within the Ajloun region. it was built by one of Saladin’s generals in 1184 AD to control the local iron mines of Ajloun and to counter the progress of the Crusaders by dominating the tree main routes leading to the Jordan Valley and protecting the communication routes between Jordan and Syria.

Conquered by General Pompey in the year 63 BC, it passed under Roman control and became one of the ten great Roman cities composing the Confederation of Decapolis. Our local guide will introduce you to his colonnades, temples, theaters, churches, cardo-maxims and other monuments.

Umm Qays is site of the famous miracle of the Gadarene swine, Gadara was renowned in its time as a cultural centre. It was the home of several classical poets and philosophers, including Theodorus, founder of a rhetorical school in Rome, and was once called “a new Athens” by a poet. Perched on a splendid hilltop overlooking the Jordan Valley and the Sea of Galilee, Gadara is known today as Umm Qays, and boasts an impressive colonnaded street, a vaulted terrace, and the ruins of two theatres. You can take in the sights and then dine on the terrace of a fine restaurant with a breathtaking view.

Day 04: Amman – Madaba - Mount Nebo – Mukawer – Kings Highway – Petra

Breakfast at hotel, transfer south from Amman to Petra via Kings Highway, the world’s oldest route used for commuting. It used to link ancient Bashan, Giliad, and Ammon in the north with Moab, Edom, Paran, and Midian in the south. In the Bible, The Kings’ Highway is first mentioned by name in Genesis 20:17, when Moses led the Exodus through southern Jordan.

From a platform in front of the church, you can see a bronze memorial of a snake on a cross that Symbolizes the serpent raised by Moses in the desert, as well as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
