Hiking & Trekking: Program 10 Days/ 09 Nights

This program is designed for people who love to discover Jordan in a different way, hiking and trekking.
This tour will take you through Dana mountain ranges, Neolithic sites and mythical landscapes of Petra and Wadi Rum “the Valley of the Moon”. You will discover Jordan’s largest and most majestic desert landscape with its red sandstone hills and needles and ridges, at your own pace being closer to the Jordanian Bedouins and their legendary hospitality.

Day 01: Queen Alia Airport (Welcome to Jordan) – Amman

Day 02: Amman – Mount Nebo – Madaba - Kerak – Dana

Breakfast, transfer south from Amman to Dana via Wadi Al Mujib and Kings Highway, the world’s oldest route used for commuting. It used to link ancient Bashan, Giliad, and Ammon in the north with Moab, Edom, Paran, and Midian in the south. In the Bible, The Kings’ Highway is first mentioned by name in Genesis 20:17, when Moses led the Exodus through southern Jordan.

From Amman to Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo, which dates back to the time of the Prophet Moses, around the 12th century BC & is believed to be the site of the Prophet’s burial place and the point from where he viewed the “Holy Land”. On the top of the hill, housed beneath a protective structure built by the Franciscans, are the ruins of a beautiful small church, built by the early Christians in the 4th century AD. Inside, are the remains of mosaic floors with stunning designs that feature hunting and pastoral scenes. From a platform in front of the church, a visitor may see a bronze memorial of a snake on a cross which symbolizes the serpent lifted up by Moses in the desert, as well as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

From Mount Nebo to Madaba

Proceed to Madaba, home of the most famous Byzantine mosaics. Visit the greatest and most significant of all the city’s treasures, the wonderful mosaic map of ancient Palestine, which is located on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The 6th century AD map, hailed as the oldest in existence, was depicted for the benefit of the pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, as it represented the surrounding regions as well. The River Nile, the Jordan River, Lake Tiberias and the Dead Sea are easily identified on this map, in addition to many cities such as Bethlehem, Gaza and Jerusalem. One can clearly make out the walls, towers, gates, streets and buildings of the Holy City of Jerusalem, especially the colonnaded main street or Cardo, and the domed Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

From Madaba to Kerak

Procced to Kerak through the stunning canyon of Wadi el Mujib, where you will visit its imposing Crusader castle built in (AD 1142). Visitors will be amazed by the network of the dimly lit vaulted rooms and corridors, interconnected through heavy arches and doorways.
An ancient Crusader stronghold, Karak sits 900 m above sea level and lies inside the walls of the old city .Kerak’s best – reserved halls and passageways are located underground and can only be reached through a massive door. The city of Kerak was the ancient capital of Moab. During the Roman times it was known as Characomba.

Shawbak Castle, once called “Le Krak de Montreal”, Shawbak refers to the castle as well as to its surrounding group of ten villages.
The castle is located less than an hour’s drive north of Petra, and was inhabited till the 1950s. It is perched on the side of a mountain, with a grand sweep of fruit trees below. Built during the crusader times, 894 years ago, Shawbak castle appears as a natural extension of a dramatic hill.

Close to Petra, after a 10 minutes’ drive, you find Al Beidha, better known as Little Petra. You enter the site through a narrow gorge called Siq al-Barid, the “cold Siq”. The name refers to the circumstance that the high walls prevent sunlight from entering the canyon and warming it. The Siq is 350 meters long with three wider areas inside.

Breakfast, free time to discover Petra by yourself and take photos. Although some activities are not permitted within the site itself, there are plenty of really great locations in the area. If you’ve explored all there is to see in Petra itself and you still have energy for more, head down the Wadi to Little Petra. It may not be as quite as monumental as the main site but it was an important suburb of Petra and there is still much to see here.

Back to your hotel for Dinner and overnight.

Day 06: Petra – Wadi Rum – Full Day Hiking

Breakfast, transfer south to Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon), hiking and trekking for 3 days.
Dinner and overnight in the desert under the stars (bivouac).
