Recently discovered by the eminent Greek archaeologist, Constantinos Politis, the site has revealed the actual cave to which the biblical figure of Lot fled with his daughters during the destruction of Sodom &Gomorrah. The site is pershed precariously on a hillside overlooking the Dead Sea (near Safi) .

In addition to the cave of Lot , a large Byzantine Basilica Church has also been unearthed other finds include the monastery's refectory , reservoir, mosaic floors, numerous cairn and other tombs, and Bronze age pottery .
